HISTORY

Kanaflex’s story begins in 1952 with the founding of Totaku Industries in Osaka, Japan. At a time when hoses were primarily made from rubber or metal, Totaku changed the industry. In 1957, the company developed the world’s first PVC suction hose, introducing a new category of lightweight, flexible, and durable hose technology. This breakthrough earned national recognition in Japan and set the foundation for decades of innovation.

Global Expansion

In 1966, Kanaflex Corporation was established to scale this technology globally. Throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, Kanaflex expanded rapidly, exporting its hose technology to North America, Europe, and Asia. By 1973, Kanaflex established operations in the United States, marking the beginning of its long-standing presence in the North American industrial market.

Building an Engineering-Driven Company

Through the 1970s and 1980s, Kanaflex expanded beyond hose into broader engineered products, including civil engineering systems, piping, and infrastructure materials. During this time, the company continued investing in material science, advancing thermoplastics and polymer-based solutions. In 1983, Kanaflex established its manufacturing facility in Vernon Hills, Illinois, strengthening its ability to serve the North American market with domestically produced hose.

Growth in Industrial Markets

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Kanaflex solidified its position as a leading industrial hose manufacturer. The company focused on key markets including agriculture, construction, material handling, petroleum, and environmental services. Its business model centered on distribution, building strong partnerships with industrial distributors rather than selling direct. At the same time, Kanaflex expanded its product portfolio to include advanced PVC, urethane, and specialty hoses designed for specific applications.

Innovation and Infrastructure

As the market evolved, Kanaflex continued to push into new areas of innovation. This included the development of non-PVC materials, infrastructure solutions such as drainage and rehabilitation systems, and advanced engineered products designed for long service life. The company maintained a focus on solving real-world application challenges through engineering, rather than competing as a commodity supplier.

Kanaflex Today

Today, Kanaflex operates as a global organization with strong roots in Japanese engineering and a major presence in North America. With manufacturing in the United States and a nationwide distribution network, the company continues to serve a wide range of industrial markets. Recent years have focused on strengthening product development, improving service and inventory, and reinforcing Kanaflex’s position as a premium, performance-driven manufacturer.
